Scared, Alec realized. Whoever this mundane was, he was scared. And Alec probably seemed like something else to be scared of. Instantly, he felt guilty for his annoyance. Being in a foreign place without his family wasn't a reason to take things out on others. He should have learned that lesson months ago but it seemed that it was easy to fall back onto old habits. Alec tried to think of how to apologize but wasn't sure how to do it without making things worse.

"It's okay. I'll help you find your way." His voice was soft and steady, just loud enough for the Mundane to hear. Like he was talking to Max. His heart ached for a moment as he realized he was using that special, big brother voice and then pushed the thought aside. "I'm new too," he said, looking over the Mundane's shoulder to study the map. "I'm Alec. They gave me one of those maps and they're impossible to read unless you stare at them for hours." Or had a rune that helped clarify things like incomprehensible maps.
