It had been a long journey, from the Wall to Oldtown, but when wakes up on this boat, he knows it's almost over. There's something strange about it, though. The boat looks different, for one thing, and he can't hear the water anymore. He stumbles his way through the dark to the deck above, and the first thing he determines while blinking away the sudden sunshine is that he is dressed too warmly in his Night's Watch furs. There's no constant cold here. He should have taken that into consideration when he set off in this direction.
He still doesn't think this is right though. Nothing he has heard about Oldtown indicates that it is surrounded by clouds like this, and he doesn't recognize any of his fellow passengers. There even seems to be one missing. "Gilly? Gilly? Where are you?" This is terrible. He's supposed to be taking care of her and baby Sam, making sure nothing happens to them, and now he's lost them.
He follows the crowd off the boat onto the docks, still hoping to find her. "Gilly?"
[Library]
He has waited as long as he can. He has gotten settled in, and met a whole mess of Starks, and switched out his too-warm clothes for something more appropriate. Today he is going to visit the library he's heard about. Maester Aemon had relied on Sam to be his eyes for more than just reading and writing letters, and while that library had contained more than his father's library had, it doesn't compare to what he's heard about the library at the Citadel. He wants to see this one for himself.
Following the map and the directions the others gave him, he finds the library easily. When he steps inside, he knows that this will not be a waste of a visit. There are more books here than he has seen in his life. He may be gawking just a little with an awed look on his face. Sorry.
