Her eyes glanced up to him, still not comprehending. It had been a basement, but Ian hadn't done anything that had been life threatening. She would remember that, wouldn't she? She remembered the tattoo, which still throbbed on her chest, and the bumps and bruises that had come along his treatment of her. She knew it was something that if she hadn't done anything, that he would have, which was why Emily had taken the fight to him. She wasn't going to let anyone else die because of her, just as he had killed all those families before.
Yet the world seemed to slow to a halt. To pause. There was no recollection of any of it, and if he was saying she was dead... Was he? How was she here? How was he here? None of it made any sense, which had Emily thinking that something within her had snapped, gone off, was no longer based in reality. But then his arms where there. Strong and real and the world seemed to move again, even if things still didn't become any clearer.
Emily knew that as much as she had shared over the years, it was one thing that she never had. Not a word in passing, not a mention. Even when it had started to come crashing down, she knew that she couldn't turn to them, as turning to them would put them in the crosshairs and she would never have been able to live with herself if anything had happened to them. Yet he knew then? Knew about Declan. She knew her own identity and role in the mission would have come out, knew that they would have come to her side, knew that Ian wasn't someone who you messed around with.
"I-" And yet she was at a loss for words. She had gone under the assumption that it might be her last days on Earth, but Emily hadn't been willing to go down without a fight. There were things that she clearly would never get to say, if what Derek was telling her was true. "I am sorry."
Three small words. Not worth too much in the grand scheme of things, but the weight and the emotion behind them were clear. She had never meant to hurt them- to hurt any of them- but it it was between that and keeping them safe, she would have taken the latter.
